J.D. Power and Associates Ranks Sony Ericsson Highest Mobile Handset Provider for Second Consecutive Time

For the second consecutive time, Sony Ericsson ranked highest in U.S. overall customer satisfaction performance among wireless mobile phone brands in the 2008 J.D. Power and Associates U.S. Wireless Mobile Phone Evaluation Study(SM). Sony Ericsson was previously ranked highest in the same study during periods of 2006 and 2007.

"Achieving the top ranking for performance and quality of our mobile handsets from consumers is an honor and demonstrates our commitment to bring a broad range of world class handsets that both simplify and enrich the wireless communication experience of our U.S. consumers," said Najmi Jarwala, president of Sony Ericsson North America. "Just as this study measures the 'satisfaction experience of handsets,' Sony Ericsson's long-standing goal is to set the standard for product and application innovation, and to create mobile handsets that lead in design, quality and ease of use. Already, 2008 is proving to be a milestone year for Sony Ericsson in the U.S. with the largest portfolio of handsets fitting a wide range of consumer lifestyles."

In this 2008 Vol. 1 Mobile Phone Study, Sony Ericsson ranked highest among mobile phone brands with a score of 740, significantly higher than industry average. Sony Ericsson received significantly higher than industry average scores in all factors, which included physical design, operation, features and battery function.

The study measured customers' satisfaction with wireless handsets based on five key product performance factors, including physical design, operation, features, handset durability and battery function.

Sony Ericsson entered the wireless handset market in 2001 as a joint venture between Sony and Ericsson. Since its inception, the company has released a number of Sony sub-branded handsets, including the Walkman(TM) and Cyber-shot(TM) brands in 2005 and 2006, respectively. In February 2008, Sony Ericsson launched XPERIA(TM), the first sub-brand born within Sony Ericsson.

Dari Sony Ericsson Press Release :

Sony Ericsson’s New Technology, Project Capuchin, Bridges Java™ ME and Adobe® Flash Lite™

30 April 2008

Enables fast and clean user interface development for both graphical designers and code developers

Stockholm, Sweden – April 30, 2008 – Sony Ericsson Mobile Communication today announced plans to release a new technology that, for the first time, bridges the Abobe® Flash Lite™ and Java ME™ development platforms. The new technology and tools, referred to as Project Capuchin, make it possible to combine the richness of Flash Lite and Java ME technologies allowing developers to utilize the best attributes of both software stacks to create content-rich mobile applications. Sony Ericsson has plans to make the technology available during the second half of 2008 and will demonstrate Project Capuchin enabled applications at the JavaOne Developer Event in San Francisco, May 6 – 9, booth 718 in the Pavilion.

“Sony Ericsson is excited to introduce our new bridging technology to the global developer community as it further strengthens our relationship with this community and underscores our ongoing commitment to support an open, healthy and thriving mobile ecosystem,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, SVP and Head of Portfolio and Proposition at Sony Ericsson. “We are dedicated to exploring opportunities that enable us to provide innovative and energized user experiences. To achieve this, we work with world class partners and technologies, on both platform and product development.”

Project Capuchin will provide developers with an intuitive tool to create applications with a cleaner user interface (UI) without sacrificing the strong, feature rich and widely deployed Java ME infrastructure, including secure, well-developed content distribution. Project Capuchin’s bridging software will empower two distinct developer communities to leverage their respective expertises to create the next generation of highly engaging and immersive mobile content.

“Adobe is pleased to support Sony Ericsson’s Project Capuchin. Using Adobe Flash technology as one part of this new bridging technology will ensure further innovation for mobile users when Flash developers gain access to the Java applications’ functionality and intelligence allowing them to create applications with the ultimate user experience,” said Gary Kovacs, general manager and vice president for Mobile and Devices at Adobe. “It is encouraging to see Sony Ericsson’s intention in making the technology available to the wider community.”

Project Capuchin will allow pure Flash Lite content to be encapsulated in Java ME applications with the help of Sony Ericsson Developer World tools, making content created by Adobe Flash technology appear as Java ME applications.

More advanced capabilities will allow Flash Lite technology to handle an entire presentation layer and make it possible to create Java ME applications where some or all UI components are defined in Flash.

Dari Sony Ericsson Press Release :
Sony Ericsson serves up game, set and match with Maria Sharapova Design Collection

19 June 2008

London , UK – 19 June 2008 – Days before ‘The Championships’ at Wimbledon, Maria Sharapova served up an ace on the catwalk with the unveiling of the Sony Ericsson Maria Sharapova Design Collection.

Starting the tennis season with a dash of glamour and style, the collection was unveiled by Sony Ericsson and one of the world’s most famous tennis players, Maria Sharapova, to a select audience of international lifestyle journalists flown into London for the special occasion.

Maria Sharapova is Sony Ericsson’s first global brand ambassador. The four year agreement was sealed in January 2008 and the Maria Sharapova Design Collection is the first design collaboration campaign to be announced.

“Working on this collection was an opportunity that I could not turn down,” said Maria Sharapova at the unveiling. “Sony Ericsson helped me create a collection of mobile phone accessories that I know people will use. And I wanted to add my touch to each item. People want style, fashion and glamour, and with this collection I know that they’ll have it.

I am looking forward to using the collection with my Sony Ericsson T303 which is equally as stylish and great to listen to music on when I exercise and when I like to relax after a match.”

Some of London’s up and coming faces on the catwalk modelled the season’s fashion look by young urban designers to compliment the Maria Sharapova Design Collection. Louise Roe, stylist and fashion expert, hosted the show and presented the Sony Ericsson mobile phone accessories to leading lifestyle media writers from around the world. The Maria Sharapova Design Collection consists of the IDC-31 Courtside Case, the compact IDC-32 Exercise Case, the IDC-33 Party Bag and the IDC-34 Travel Wallet. The Design Collection is inspired by Maria Sharapova’s own global lifestyle, and the latest fashion trends.

Speaking at the fashion show, Sony Ericsson Designer Lykke Tarsbol said: “It was a pleasure working with Maria on the design of this collection. We wanted to create a collection that represented her life on and off the court. We worked closely to ensure that every item was designed with her and for her.”

As a leading personality not just on the tennis court, but also in the world of style and fashion, Maria Sharapova brought to the project a wealth of fashion knowledge and glamour, by working closely with Sony Ericsson’s design team to create an aspirational collection of accessories.

The Maria Sharapova Design Collection will be available in all markets in Q3.

As I was trying to get the car out, the fly landed on the windscreen and I thought it was the perfect picture. I would not have captured it if I had not had my camera phone with me.”

World View 2008 harnesses the global power of the internet, and has launched a stunning new website www.sonyericsson.com/worldview. The Experts’ Choice winner, chosen by Sony Ericsson’s panel of elite photography judges, will receive a once-in-a-lifetime trip worth £10,000/€12,500.

This year sees the introduction of world renowned Liu Heung Shing to the respected panel of World View judges: Sony Ericsson Senior Designer from the Creative Design Centre, Martin Wezowski; Reuters UK & Ireland Chief of Photography, David Viggers; and leading global photographer Tony Briggs, a former London Photographer of the Year.

Mobile leaders to unify the Symbian software platform and set the future of mobile free

June 24, 2008

Foundation to be established to provide royalty-free open platform and accelerate innovation

London, UK - Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS(TM), S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform. Together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone they plan to establish the Symbian Foundation to extend the appeal of this unified software platform. Membership of this non-profit Foundation will be open to all organizations. This initiative is supported by current shareholders and management of Symbian Limited, who have been actively involved in its development. Plans for the Foundation have already received wide support from other industry leaders.

To enable the Foundation, Nokia today announced plans to acquire the remaining shares of Symbian Limited that Nokia does not already own and then contribute the Symbian and S60 software to the Foundation. Sony Ericsson and Motorola today announced their intention to contribute technology from UIQ and DOCOMO has also indicated its willingness to contribute its MOAP(S) assets. From these contributions, the Foundation will provide a unified platform with common UI framework. A full platform will be available for all Foundation members under a royalty-free license, from the Foundation's first day of operations.

Contributions from Foundation members through open collaboration will be integrated to further enhance the platform. The Foundation will make selected components available as open source at launch. It will then work to establish the most complete mobile software offering available in open source. This will be made available over the next two years and is intended to be released under Eclipse Public License (EPL) 1.0.

The Foundation's platform will build on the leading open mobile software platform, with more than 200 million phones, across 235 models, already shipped by multiple vendors and tens of thousands of third-party applications already available for Symbian OS-based devices.

"Ten years ago, Symbian was established by far sighted players to offer an advanced open operating system and software skills to the whole mobile industry", said Nigel Clifford, CEO of Symbian. "Our vision is to become the most widely used software platform on the planet and indeed today Symbian OS leads its market by any measure. Today's announcement is a bold new step to achieve that vision by embracing a complete and proven platform, offered in an open way, designed to stimulate innovation which is at the heart of everything we do."

"Establishing the Foundation is one of the biggest contributions to an open community ever made," said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO of Nokia. "Nokia is a strong supporter of open platforms and technologies as they give the freedom to build, maintain and evolve applications and services across device segments and offer by far the largest ecosystem, enabling rapid innovation. Today's announcement is a major milestone in our devices software strategy."

"The complete, consistent platform that the Foundation plans to provide will allow manufacturers to focus on their unique differentiation at a device level" said Dick Komiyama, President of Sony Ericsson. "Sony Ericsson believes that the unified Symbian Foundation platform will greatly simplify the world for handset manufacturers, operators and developers, enabling greater innovation in services and applications to the benefit of consumers everywhere."

"Motorola has long been a leader and advocate of open software for mobile platforms. We're excited to be joining Nokia, Sony Ericsson, NTT DOCOMO and others in leading this open source effort to form the new Symbian Foundation and unite the Symbian ecosystem," said Alain Mutricy, Senior Vice President, Platforms & Technology Office, Motorola Mobile Devices. "Also, Motorola, together with Sony Ericsson, will be contributing UIQ technology to the Foundation and will work with UIQ as they are refocusing as an important supplier in the new Symbian ecosystem. This will be a great addition, as the Foundation will be able to leverage UIQ's unique experience, which includes expertise in touch technology."

"DOCOMO welcomes this development and we look forward to moving our Symbian based devices and service onto the Foundation platform. We are also willing to contribute our MOAP(S) assets to the Foundation. This is a very positive step in further increasing the adoption of the Symbian software and creating an even more open, consistent and complete platform. The Foundation software will enable us to enjoy the benefits of a global platform in bringing new, leading-edge services to the Japanese market. It will increase efficiency and help us provide our wide customer base with the most advanced mobile experiences." said Toshio Miki, Associate Senior Vice President, Managing Director of Communication Device Development Department of NTT DOCOMO.

"Mobile phones have turned into sophisticated multimedia computers and smart phones continue to grow in popularity," said Kris Rinne, Senior Vice President of Architecture and Planning at AT&T. "The Symbian Foundation will reduce fragmentation in the industry and holds the promise of incorporating leading technology and the most mature software into a unified platform for the entire industry. This will create an environment that will encourage and enable developers to build compelling applications that will positively affect our customers' lives and support AT&T in offering its differentiated services to consumers."

"Joining the Symbian Foundation is an ideal opportunity for LG to broaden our commitment to providing our customers with the best possible mobile experience" said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "We believe that open mobile platforms will contribute to advance the mobile industry. At LG we will play a leading role in creating a better mobile environment, working with the Symbian Foundation to provide our customers with smart new features based on this open platform."

"Samsung Electronics is committed to Symbian as one of the future platforms for our mobile devices and believes that establishing the Foundation is a visionary move in positioning the platform as a proven open platform for future development. We are delighted to be playing a significant role in that future by joining the Foundation board. We have already used Symbian and S60 software successfully to deliver appealing devices and see these steps making the platform even more attractive for bringing the latest technologies and services to the market" said Dr. Do Hun Kwon, VP & Managing Director, Samsung Electronics Research Institute.

"ST sees strong consumer demand, across all segments, for a richer multimedia experience," said Monica de Virgiliis, General Manager of the Wireless Multimedia Division, STMicroelectronics. "This new foundation synchronizes and harmonizes the mainstream software approach to address this need and makes the software widely available. We anticipate this will fuel the growth of multimedia-capable devices and we are excited about being able to leverage our long-standing leadership in consumer digital multimedia to satisfy more and more consumers."

"TI has long supported open platforms, and we are excited about the formation of the Symbian Foundation. We believe the new structure will remove barriers to innovation in the mobile industry by providing a common platform on which exciting next-generation applications and services can be built," said Greg Delagi, senior vice president of TI's Wireless Business Unit. "Manufacturers can get a head-start on development with TI's proven OMAP-based Symbian S60 software development platform. Combined with the Foundation's open collaboration model, this will allow more developers to harness the performance and multimedia capabilities of the OMAP family to accelerate improvements in the mobile user experience."

"Vodafone believes this is a significant step in driving mobile innovation for the Internet as well as creating a richer mobile experience for our customers" said Jens Schulte-Bockum, Vodafone's Global Director of Terminals. "We have been challenging the industry to reduce complexity and focus on fewer operating systems. This step will help to drive even faster innovation, as well as enable operators to accelerate time-to-market for compelling and varied new services."

Foundation members share the vision that the Foundation will unify the software platform, supercharge innovation and accelerate the availability of new services and compelling experiences for consumers and business users around the world. The combined platform is already one of the most advanced and widely used mobile platforms, making it highly attractive for all ecosystem partners, including developers, mobile operators, content and service providers and device manufacturers.

The Foundation is expected to start operating during the first half of 2009, subject to the closing of the acquisition of Symbian Ltd by Nokia.

Dari Sony Ericsson Press Room :

Sony Ericsson reports second quarter results

18 July 2008

Q2 Highlights:

* Break even results amid challenging market conditions and increased competition
* Announcement of Open Mobile Software platform and Symbian Foundation
* R&D investment continues
* Alignment of operations to help restore profitable growth

London, UK - The consolidated financial summary for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (Sony Ericsson) for the second quarter ended June 30, 2008 is as follows:

Units shipped in the quarter were 24.4 million, in line with our June 27, 2008 interim announcement of 24 million units. Sales for the quarter were Euro 2,820 million, a decrease of 9% compared to the second quarter of 2007 due to unfavourable exchange rate fluctuation, continued slowing market growth in mid- to high-end phones and increased competition. Gross margin also decreased compared with a year ago reflecting a less favourable product mix, with particular impact in Europe, and increased price competition in general. Income before taxes for the quarter decreased compared to the second quarter of 2007 for the same reasons, as well as due to higher R&D investments as a percentage of sales.

Average selling price (ASP) for Sony Ericsson decreased both sequentially and year-on-year due to the impact of a greater proportion of lower priced phones in the product portfolio, as well as increased price competition in the market for mid- to high-end phones. Market share for the second quarter is estimated to be around 8%.

During the second quarter Sony Ericsson announced seven new phones, including its first 8 Megapixel Cyber-shot™ model, the C905. In addition the company started shipping 12 new phones, including a number of mid- to high-end Cyber-shot™ and Walkman™ models toward the end of the quarter.

“We are aligning our operations and resources worldwide to meet an increasingly competitive business environment and to help restore our capability for profitable growth. The measures we are taking are aimed at becoming a faster, more agile and more cost efficient organisation that can continue to create innovative products that excite consumers,” said Dick Komiyama, President, Sony Ericsson. “Our target is to achieve a reduction in operating expenses of Euro 300 million annually, with the full effect expected to appear within a year. We estimate that our restructuring charges will be of the same magnitude as our reduction in operating expenses, and we will incur such charges as our measures are implemented.”

Sony Ericsson joined leading phone manufacturers, operators and vendors in announcing its support for the establishment of the Symbian Foundation, an initiative that will enable all members of the foundation to use the Symbian operating software platform, royalty-free. The Symbian Foundation is planned to be operational by the end of 2008.

Sony Ericsson forecasts that the global handset market for 2008 will grow at a rate of around 10% from more than 1.1 billion units in 2007, with continued decline in industry ASP. The majority of this growth is expected to be in emerging markets where lower priced phones dominate.

Challenging market conditions are expected to prevail for Sony Ericsson for at least the rest of 2008, and in particular for the third quarter.

Cyber-shot™ and WALKMAN™ are trademarks of Sony Corporation.

Sony Ericsson to cut 2,000 jobs as sales slump

Cell phone maker Sony Ericsson on Friday outlined plans to cut 2,000 jobs across the globe amid falling profits.

The company, which employs 750 people in Research Triangle Park, didn't immediately say where it plans to cut the jobs. The layoffs at Sony Ericsson are part of a plan to save 300 million euros annually, CEO Dick Komiyama said in a statement.

A company representative wasn't immediately available for comment.

The announcement of the cuts came the same day Sony Ericsson said second quarter profits were essentially wiped out by waning demand for the company's high-end products. Net income was 6 million euros ($9.5 million) in the quarter, down from 220 million euros a year earlier.

Sales also slipped, to 2.82 billion euros ($4.46 billion), from 3.11 billion euros a year earlier.

The company blamed its woes on waning demand for high-end phones. Sony Ericsson is a market leader at that end of the market, with its brands including Cyber-shot picture phones and Walkman music phones.

But the company has been slow to move into the low end of the market. That's caused it to cede market share even as the average selling price for one of its phones has dropped. The average selling price of a Sony Ericsson phone was 116 euros in the second quarter, down from 125 euros a year earlier.

The company warned in June that slowing sales and product delays would cause it to break even in the quarter. On Friday, it said that "challenging market conditions are expected to prevail for Sony Ericsson for at least the rest of 2008, and in particular for the third quarter."

Sony Ericsson is a joint venture of Japan's Sony (NYSE: SNE) and Sweden's Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERIC).

17 July 2008

Tokyo, July 17, 2008 - Sony Corporation, Canon Inc., Eastman Kodak Company, Hitachi Ltd., Victor Company of Japan, KDDI Corporation, Kenwood Corporation, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic), Nikon Corporation, Olympus Imaging Corporation, Pioneer Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Seiko Epson Corporation, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, Toshiba Corporation today announced an agreement to form a consortium to develop specifications for interconnecting products using “TransferJet” a new interoperable wireless transfer technology that enables rapid transfer of high resolution video, music and images. The “TransferJet Consortium” (www.transferjet.org) plans to promote a wide range of products and services incorporating TransferJet technology with the aim of accelerating its adoption throughout the consumer electronics industry.

TransferJet wireless technology enables a high speed data transmission rate of 560Mbps, while eliminating the need for complex setup and operation. Directly touching two compliant electronic products together allows files to be transferred automatically, without the need for an access point. For example, touching a TV with a digital camera enables photos to be instantaneously displayed on the TV screen. Alternatively, downloaded music content can be easily enjoyed by touching a mobile phone to a portable audio player. TransferJet can be used as a universal interface across all consumer electronics devices.

The “TransferJet Consortium” will develop specifications and guidelines ensuring interoperability between products incorporating the technology, establish licensing schemes and administer the use of the TransferJet logo. The Consortium will also promote the advantages across industries and to consumers. Through these initiatives, the Consortium will aim to create and expand the market for TransferJet products.

Bravia Phones Coming to India!

Sony Ericsson to leverage on parent brand
Arijit Banerjee and Neha Jain
Saturday, August 09, 2008 (New Delhi)

Facing tough competition in India, Sony Ericsson, the handset arm of Sony, is now dialing its parent company Sony to leverage the brand recall of its brands like Walkman, Cybershot and Bravia to take on its rivals.

With just about 13 per cent market share in mobile handsets in India the company is way below the 62.5 per cent market share enjoyed by Nokia, the market leader.

So Arun Sethi, President, Sony Ericsson India, is tapping the brands owned by its parent Sony to ring in better brand recall for its handsets.

It has already launched Walkman and Cybershot brands in the mobile segment and now it is the turn of Bravia Sony's popular TV brand.

"In Japan if you see we have already integrated the brand Bravia in the handset business and with the time we will do that in India too," said Sethi.

Sony Ericsson expects India to contribute almost 25 per cent of the global handset business over the next two years.

To do that Sony is ramping up its manufacturing facility in India to churn out almost 10 million handsets a year, most of which will be low cost, in line with the rural thrust of many mobile operators.

"We are aware of people's need to be connected. The people is rural India will be using our AM phones so we know that there are special needs there and we know how to fulfill," added Sethi.

Sony Ericsson is also getting ready to ride the 3G boom using its experience in Japan to pip Nokia to the top post in 3G handset business.

Moga2 nanti giliran untuk Indonesia datang juga...

Dari Mobile Today :

Sony Ericsson is the latest to open new music store

Sony Ericsson is poised to launch its own music store in the coming months, but it won’t take the confrontational approach with operators adopted by Nokia.

Sony Ericsson has spent a large part of this year coveting music labels and operators for the service, which will launch under its PlayNow brand.

The company will soon announce a range of phones that the new PlayNow service will be available on, and has been striking revenue share deals with operators.

Sony Ericsson’s marketing director, David Hilton, told Mobile: ‘We’ve approached and had discussions with all the operators, and a number of those talks are still ongoing. It’s a good commercial opportunity.’

The manufacturer has been keen to point out to operators that there is little money in sales of music tracks, and has been emphasising the bigger margins operators stand to gain from selling data bundles.

The news from Sony Ericsson comes as O2 and Vodafone both announced their own music stores this week. O2 announced a tie-up with Sony BMG for its new service, while Vodafone has launched ‘Vodafone Music’, which will be available alongside the Omnifone MusicStation platform.

O2’s offer, MyPlay, is unlikely to be as compelling because it only offers tracks from one record label. The store is already live and full music tracks cost 99p, videos are £1.50 and tones cost £3.50.

Meanwhile, the Vodafone Music service allows customers to buy and download songs per track or album. It differs from Vodafone’s other service, MusicStation, which is effectively a rental service. Singles and albums from Vodafone Music cost an average of 99p and £7.99 respectively and customers can browse the store free of charge. The service is live now.

In addition, Sony Ericsson’s rival, LG, was expected to launch the MusicStation Max service on its handsets this summer, but the launch has suffered a setback. Nokia is also expected to unveil its unlimited free music store, Comes With Music, before Christmas this year.

Sony Ericsson Exec sees tough market into 2009

* Head of sales sees rough market conditions into next year
* Says firm not discussing additional savings measures
* Says company needs to focus on its strength in high-end and won't aim for low-end entry segment for market share

By Adam Cox

COPENHAGEN, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson expects the challenging market conditions that have savaged its books to extend into next year, its head of sales said.
Global sales chief Anders Runevad told Reuters in an interview late on Tuesday that the firm would need to focus on its core high-end segment and play to its strengths before trying to launch a fresh attempt at regaining market share.
The remarks about tough business conditions -- coming as international financial markets are reeling -- go beyond what Sony Ericsson said in its second-quarter report. At that time, it predicted a challenging market at least through this year.
Owned by Ericsson and Sony Corp, the world's No. 5 handset maker posted a 2 million euro operating loss in the second quarter and announced plans to cut 2,000 jobs and save 300 million euros in costs.
"I think that the market will continue to be challenging going into 2009. I think it's prudent to plan for a continued challenged market," Runevad said.
Asked whether any additional savings measures were being discussed, Runevad said, "No."
Falling demand for high-end phones, the result of protracted economic anxiety, have led to an abrupt downturn for the firm. Sony Ericsson had to issue profit warnings for both the first and second quarters.
Runevad acknowledged that the past couple weeks of havoc in financial markets was not a welcome development, although he was cautious about talking about the specific effect.
"The situation has not improved since Q2, that's for sure," he said. Asked if the backdrop had grown worse, he only repeated that it had not improved.
BACK TO BASICS
The executive said that when Sony Ericsson gave its outlook in the second quarter report, it of course did not expect the banking crisis that has pummelled global markets and is threatening to unhinge the world economy.
"But realistically, for that to ripple through to the consumer behaviour probably takes a little bit of time. I mean it's not instant."
He said Sony Ericsson could not think this was just a short-term dip and that next year "everything will be rosy again."
In the first quarter, Sony Ericsson dropped to fifth place in volumes shipped, ceding the fourth spot to South Korea's LG Electronics. Finland's Nokia is the clear market leader.
Asked how long it might be before Sony Ericsson made a bid to rise back up the market share rankings, Runevad said now was a time to be prudent, see what was happening in the market and focus on Sony Ericsson's core strengths.
"We have to take a little bit of a step back, to go back to those basics again, and that means, for example, we will not ... go drastically into lower-end entry just to get the volume."
That marks a change from Sony Ericsson's past ambitions. Buoyed by a string of strong quarters, the company as recently as last year wanted to go deeper into emerging markets.
Runevad said Sony Ericsson still saw opportunities in markets such as China and India, but it would focus on its traditional strengths.
Sony Ericsson, under President Dick Komiyama, who took the job in late 2007, has also signalled it wanted to improve in North America.
"We're making good progress in North America," Runevad said.

Dari Sony Ericsson Press Release :

Sony Ericsson expands its sustainability credentials with the launch of its environmental warranty and the GreenHeart™ phone

24 September 2008

Lund, Sweden – September 24, 2008 – Today marked the launch of Sony Ericsson’s environmental warranty, and the concept of Sony Ericsson GreenHeart™ phones, just two initiatives the company is taking to further its commitment to a sustainable future and continually reducing its impact on the environment.

Environmental warranty

The launch of Sony Ericsson’s environmental warranty means that now, when any Sony Ericsson product is taken to a designated collection point, Sony Ericsson will recycle this product in an environmentally sound way. This warranty is valid globally, regardless of where the product was originally purchased, as Sony Ericsson strives to show its support for ‘individual producer responsibility’ (IPR).

Sony Ericsson has long-since participated in and supported the development of common industry systems that relate to the collection and recycling of old mobile phones and accessories. Launching its own collection points and system means that Sony Ericsson will be able to further strengthen its commitment to taking responsibility for the products it sold to consumers.

This new initiative has now been initiated in India, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Singapore USA and Mexico. To date, more than 500 collection points are already in operation. Sony Ericsson intends to complete this rollout by 2009 in all the countries in which it operates. The company’s solely-owned collection points will be primarily made available in those countries where the current industry-standard system of phone recycling have been judged to be too limited.

Sony Ericsson also plans to develop the way in which it spreads information about this new initiative through its customer help desks and over the internet. The aim is to give consumers easy access to information on their nearest recycling drop off point.

GreenHeart™ phones

As a company that puts environmental sustainability at the heart of its product development, Sony Ericsson wanted to explore new ideas in this area through a concept design study.

The GreenHeart™ is a full concept with all life cycle in mind it includes features such as bio-plastic housings, recycled plastic keypads, zero charger with 3.5mW standby power, HTML based e-manuals, a game style educational application ‘Ecomate’ and environmentally conscious packaging.

This concept has been shared with a few selected partners in the industry, whose response has been extremely positive. Sony Ericsson will therefore take this concept and initiate a two-way conversation with customers on what features they believe should be implemented in future phones and in what priority.

Environmentally, all of Sony Ericsson products live up to the extremely high standards that are expected by the industry. Pursuing policies such as the global phase out of unwanted substances, and being a leader in charger performance, is included in all our current product offerings. This is also recognised by external organisations worldwide, with Greenpeace, for example, naming Sony Ericsson as the ‘greenest electronics company’ for 2008. With the GreenHeart™ concept however, Sony Ericsson is looking to the future, to ensure the full life cycle of a mobile phone can be made more environmentally friendly. Once the technology reaches maturity, new techniques and materials will then be included in the portfolio and a market wide launch. One ‘eco’ product by itself will not make a difference but by learning through this concept study we are ensuring the entire portfolio in future will be more sustainable.

Sustainability

Sony Ericsson takes its role in creating a sustainable future very seriously. The company continually works to improve people’s lives by following best business practices, conserving resources and protecting the environment.

Mats Pellbäck-Scharp, head of corporate sustainability for Sony Ericsson commented: ‘Building on Sony Ericsson’s existing sustainability efforts, we’re proud to have taken the next step in making our products and process more sustainable. The global take back scheme and the GreenHeart project bring us closer to our vision of being a leader in sustainability in the mobile phone industry’.

For Sony Ericsson, our approach to sustainability is based on the following principles:

* Safeguarding future profitability in an environmentally conscious world
* Improving our influence on the living and working conditions of all those involved in the making of our products
* Making a positive impact on those who use our products
* Improving how our products and activities impact on the environment

Other areas that the company are committed to improve include:

* Supply chain social responsibility
* CO2 emissions from transport and other activities
* Reporting of impact on the environment
* Projects to improve global social conditions in the developing world by improving communications
* Community engagement where we operate
* Employee empowerment and engagement

Diversity is one of the core strengths of the company, with operations in over 80 countries including manufacturing in China and R&D sites in China, Europe, India, Japan and North America. Sony Ericsson Environment

Entertaining a sustainable future

Sony Ericsson considers sustainable development and production to be one of the most important challenges for the future and one that demands immediate action from responsible manufacturers. At Sony Ericsson we have implemented a life cycle approach to product development that takes into account design, supply chain, manufacturing, product use (operation), and end of life treatment of all our products. Our objective is to develop and deliver solutions that help to reduce global resource consumption and emissions to air, land and water. Our customers demand environmentally adapted products and services and we are committed to fulfill that demand.

Sony Ericsson is committed to tackle issues causing climate changes and believes that all parties in our industry need to work together towards a sustainable future. In November 2007, Sony Ericsson signed up in support of the Bali Communiqué, a comprehensive United Nations framework to tackle climate change.

Industry leadership
Setting the standard for the industry was something Sony Ericsson set out to do from the very beginning of our business in 2001. Leading in environmental considerations is fundamental in the way we design and manufacture our products. No matter in which market our products are sold, all Sony Ericsson products meet the same stringent environmental requirements.

Phasing out environmentally unwanted substances from the products
Sony Ericsson strives to produce the best products from environmental point of view and to lead the way in phasing out unwanted substances. We are therefore constantly monitoring reports and new evidence on chemical substances that might be harmful for human health and the environment. We endeavour to substitute potentially harmful chemicals with safer alternatives and that is why our starting point is the precautionary principle. The precautionary principle was defined in the UN Rio declaration as “where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation.” We believe we all have to act preventatively to reach a sustainable use of natural resources and a sound environment.

This strive towards better products is clearly manifested through our products; for example Sony Ericsson was the first company to remove brominated flame retardants from its devices. In fact, our very first phone, launched in October 2001 was bromine free. Sony Ericsson is the first manufacturer to offer a full range of products, including accessories, which are also bromine free (free from brominated flame retardants in boards, cables and casings).

In addition, Sony Ericsson was also the first company to ensure that every device in its range was fully compliant with the EC directive on the restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS). Every product manufactured by us globally since the beginning of 2006 has been fully compliant and Sony Ericsson has applied this standard globally to all products it manufactures. We do not only follow the RoHS directive, but we have also taken action against a number of substances that are unwanted from an environmental perspective, and go beyond current regulations by banning or restricting them in our products. Currently we are working with phasing out of antimony, beryllium and phthalates from our products.

All Sony Ericsson products are already PVC free - except for cables in a few of our earlier chargers and accessories; these are currently being phased out.

Before any Sony Ericsson product is launched, it goes through a complete design review including material analysis of most assemblies and parts. The environmental design review process checks for the presence of any restricted or banned substances in the device. Further, each Sony Ericsson mobile phone development unit has an environmental coordinator who builds good environmental practice into the design of our products from the start. This ensures that finished products meet the stringent environmental requirements of Sony Ericsson and surpass all relevant environmental regulation.

Our products are governed through the Sony Ericsson lists of banned & restricted substances that ensures we are working with environmentally, the best possible materials.

Energy saving
During the use of a mobile phone the environmental impact of the product comes from energy use. Most of the energy used for many consumer electronic products comes from products in idle mode and not when the product is used. All the small chargers and power converters connected to grid are draining small amounts of power; and the drain from many sources leads to substantial amount of energy wasted. This is the reason why Sony Ericsson focus on the phone and accessory charger to minimise this energy waste and also why we recommend our users to un-plug the charger from the socket after the product is fully charged.

We have also gone through extensive work to minimise the power loss in standby. Sony Ericsson is proud to deliver most efficient chargers from standby power point of view. These chargers are sold together with all products all over the globe as accessories. All new models after 2005 meet EU voluntary Code of Conduct (CoC) for power supplies as well as the requirements on Energy Star. In fact they are 67% better than the EU CoC power requirements. The standby power is not more than 0.1 W for all new charger models after 2005.

Sony Ericsson is also making continuous efforts to reduce energy consumption from all our activities. For our own manufacturing site, the electricity consumption per manufactured unit was significantly reduced by 24% in 2007 compared to 2005 while the number of units produced has increased by 77%. Our goal is to reduce the carbon footprint from our own activities by 15% per produced unit by 2009 and 20% by 2011 based on the 2007 figures.

In 2007, CO2 emissions from our own manufacturing and product transportation processes were 15 200 tonnes and 228 800 tonnes respectively. Based on 103,4 million units we produced globally in 2007, our goal is to reduce these emissions by 0,35 kg per unit by 2009 and further 0,12 kg per unit by 2010.

Supplier management
Sony Ericsson insists we only work with suppliers who meet our stringent requirements. Influencing product improvement and development from environmental point of view in the full supply chain is a key factor in achieving industry leadership as well as compliance to our requirements. All Sony Ericsson suppliers must undergo assessment to ensure compliance with our environmental requirements. The assessments verify that suppliers have procedures within place to control unwanted substances in their own supply chain. Sony Ericsson cooperates with one of our parent company; Sony on their green partner program that includes audits at factory and supplier sites across the world.

Product ‘take-back’ and recycling
Sony Ericsson recognizes the importance of product ‘take-back’ and recycling. The idea of taking responsibility for our own products is a concept we believe in – for ourselves as well as in partnership with our industry. Above all, the collection and recycling systems used must be efficient and effective. Sony Ericsson participates in both voluntary and required collection and recycling schemes in many countries around the world.

We also work together with international organizations, such as the UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program), to set up guidelines for proper management of products for recycling and re-use. In addition, we subscribe to the EU directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The mobile phone industry had already begun voluntary collection and recycling of its products when the WEEE directive was being formed.

In order to measure our effectiveness – as manufacturers and as members of society in general – in influencing our consumers to return their old products, Sony Ericsson has looked into research on mobile phone users and their attitude towards product ‘take-back’.

In research conducted in parallel to the set-up of first voluntary collection and recycling programmes, it was found that users were willing to give back their old products. However, they also revealed a need to re-use their old products. As many as 50% of the users who buy a new phone keep their old one to use as a spare or for other, similar reasons, around 25% sell it on or give to a friend, family or someone else. These studies were also conducted in US with very similar results. The research shows that people do not need an incentive to return their old phone when they no longer have a need to use it for personal reasons.

Several organizations collect mobile phones for refurbishment and re-selling. Often these products move from one market to another – (from western Europe to Africa or eastern Europe or from north America to south America). While most companies working with this system do not provide numbers on how many are collected and exported out of EU or US, studies and reports from mobile phone operators clearly reveal that there are more phones collected for re-use than by the WEEE systems in those countries. 75%-85% of the phones collected by these companies are re-used and the remaining sent for recycling.

Sony Ericsson is a proud supporter of Plug-In To eCycling with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Plug-In To eCycling with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a partnership between US EPA and consumer electronics manufacturers and retailers offering consumers more opportunities to donate or recycle used electronics. For more information, please visit the EPA website. (in English only)

The EU directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has been in operation since August 2005. Sony Ericsson is fully compliant with the national legislation resulting from this directive. Sony Ericsson is a paying subscriber to the WEEE programme in all countries where we are allowed to register.

We have joint collection and recycling systems for disposed electrical and electronic products. Our preferred partner is the european recycling platform (ERP). Established by Braun GmbH, Electrolux AB, Hewlett Packard and Sony in December 2002; ERP aims to create the most efficient pan-European collection and recycling scheme for consumers, industry and the environment.

The EU WEEE directive places mobile phones in category 3 – together with monitors, IT, and telecom products. For most of the countries where the WEEE directive is included in national law, reporting is conducted for the category as a whole, with mobile phone collection not reported separately. However, for the sake of assessing how many phones are collected through the WEEE systems in the EU, we have analysed numbers from those countries where mobile phones are collected or reported separately – i.e. Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Based on these numbers, we have estimated that 5 - 6 million phones were collected during 2006 via the WEEE programmes in western Europe. When the figure is added to the higher number of collections for re-use; the total amount of phones collected can be estimated to exceed 10 million in 2006.

For Sony Ericsson, over 1 million phones were collected in 2006 in western Europe; with collection rates differing between 2% - 13% based on sales volume and between 1% - 5% based on the number of subscribers.
Sony Ericsson will continue to work with collection numbers and studies to understand and increase the number of collected products, informing the users where and how they can give proper end of life treatment to their products. While we are not satisfied with collection results so far, we see no reason why the users should not keep the product if they have a use for it.

Environmental Product Declarations
Through our environmental declarations we invite any interested parties to obtain factual information from us. This is a service that Sony Ericsson launched several years ago and gives information on the most relevant environmental aspects of each product such as material content, energy consumption, batteries, packaging and recycling.

To read the declaration for a specific product, go to the Environmental declarations page on one of our local sites and select your product.
