Sony Ericsson to seek $135.5 million or more

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese electronics maker Sony Corp said on Tuesday its loss-making mobile phone joint venture with Sweden's Ericsson (ERICb.ST) will likely seek at least 100 million euros ($135.5 million) in funds by March.

The comment by a Sony spokeswoman comes after Sony Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda said last week that the venture would need to raise funds in some way, whether it be through bank loans or via an injection from the parent companies.

Sony Ericsson said last month it planned to cut one in five jobs this year to help it return to profit after sluggish demand resulted in a hefty first-quarter loss.

Details of the fund raising will be jointly decided by the two parent companies, Sony spokeswoman Mami Imada said.

Shares in Sony were up 3.5 percent at 2,505 yen, outperforming the Tokyo stock market's electrical machinery index .IELEC.T, which gained 2.3 percent.

Sony Ericsson Sindir Pengguna Blackberry

Senin, 1 Juni 2009 - 07:30 wib
Susetyo Dwi Prihadi - Okezone

(srn)

Akhir 2009, Xperia X2 Mendarat di Indonesia

Minggu, 31 Mei 2009 - 12:18 wib
Susetyo Dwi Prihadi - Okezone

JAKARTA - Kabar terbaru datang ponsel cerdas milik Sony Ericsson, Xperia.

Sony Ericsson Bantah Fokus Pada Pasar Low End

Minggu, 31 Mei 2009 - 11:05 wib
Susetyo Dwi Prihadi - Okezone

Sony Ericsson announces new GreenHeart™ portfolio strategy and bold CO² emissions reduction targets

04 June 2009

* Company commits to 20% CO² emissions reduction across internal operations by 2015
* Additional commitment to reduce full life cycle CO² emissions by 15% for all products by 2015
* New GreenHeart™ pioneer products commits company to reduce overall environmental impact of its entire portfolio

London – June 4, 2009 – Sony Ericsson today unveiled goals for reducing CO² emissions across the whole company by 20% by 2015 in absolute terms. At the same time the company committed to reducing the total greenhouse gas emissions by 15% from the full life cycle of its products i.e. from the mining, production, through the use by consumers to the end of life management by 2015.

A key pillar of these commitments is the introduction of Sony Ericsson’s new GreenHeart™ pioneer products which launched with two flagship phones – the C901 GreenHeart™ and Naite- and the MH300 headset, one of the greenest on the market. Green innovations showcased in the new GreenHeart™ pioneer phones will migrate into the wider portfolio enabling the company to continually reduce the environmental impact of its entire portfolio, to become a benchmark for the industry.

Both the C901 GreenHeart™ and Naite build on Sony Ericsson’s industry leading ‘green core’, the result of a long standing commitment to eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals from its phones. Additional ‘green’ features include an e-manual that reduces paper usage by over 90%, smaller packaging that decreases transport related CO² emissions by over 80%, recycled plastics and a low-power charger. Thanks to these innovations, the overall CO² footprint of the GreenHeart™ products is reduced by 15%.

“Since the start of the joint venture in 2001, Sony Ericsson has strived to exceed industry standards in the removal of harmful substances and energy efficient chargers. We have implemented a full life cycle approach to sustainability in order to build phones with a green core as well as reducing CO² emissions from the product in use and ensuring sustainable end-of-life treatment.” said Dick Komiyama, President, Sony Ericsson. ”Today’s announcement on emission reduction targets and the new GreenHeart™ pioneer products is the next step in building a more sustainable business and a key pillar in our invigorated product portfolio strategy.”

For more information on Sony Ericsson’s sustainability commitments and for further detail on the GreenHeart™ programme, please join us for a global web cast and Q&A at 13:00 (UK time) on Thursday 4th June. www.sonyericsson.com/greenheart

The company is also committing to a significant increase in the volume of phones collected as part of its global TakeBack initiative. Sony Ericsson aims to collect one million phones yearly from its own system from 2011 onwards making it easy for consumers to recycle by providing more locations and information about the process.

Anne-Sofie Andersson, Director, International Chemical Secretariat (ChemSec) said, “Sony Ericsson proactively engages with our organisation on a number of chemicals related sustainability issues. In the ChemSec Business Group Sony Ericsson is a constructive and ambitious counterpart, actively contributing to the debate on initiatives such as the revision of RoHS, aimed at reducing the use of toxic chemicals and heavy metals in consumer goods.”

“Information and communications technologies can have a major role to play in delivering a low carbon world,” states Peter Madden, Chief Executive, Forum for the Future. “ We’re really pleased to be working with one of the leading manufacturers – Sony Ericsson – as they commit to making the carbon reductions necessary to avoid climate change and ensure their business can prosper in the low carbon economy of the future.”

Paris Hilton Drops BlackBerry for Sony Ericsson in Dubai (Update2)

By Ayesha Daya
[image]http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/data?pid=avimage&iid=imujY4ekqoU0[/image]

June 18 (Bloomberg) -- Paris Hilton, heiress and socialite, said she replaced her BlackBerry phone with a Sony Ericsson handset after Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Ltd. sponsored her reality TV show that will be filmed in Dubai.

Wearing a floor-length green dress, Hilton told reporters in Dubai yesterday that the 22 female contestants in the Middle Eastern version of “My New BFF” won’t be requested to pole-dance because Dubai is “much classier than Las Vegas,” where a previous series was filmed.

“That was Las Vegas and that will stay in Las Vegas. I will not make the girls do anything like that because I respect the culture here,” Hilton, 28, said at a news conference at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dubai.

Hilton is on her first visit to the Middle East as she targets the region as a new market for her brand. Dubai, one of seven sheikhdoms in the United Arab Emirates, has become the region’s most cosmopolitan city as it built offices and hotels to attract global companies such as Goldman Sachs and Halliburton Co.

She was given five Sony Ericsson handsets, Hilton said.

One is even like a watch with a phone on it and it’s so cool,” she said. “So I’m switching my BlackBerry to Sony Ericcson today. Sorry BlackBerry, I’m now a Sony Ericcson user and very excited.”

Following an infamous appearance in a sex tape posted on the Internet, Hilton’s career as a celebrity has included acting, singing, clothing lines and a perfume.

Hilton may also spend some time looking at property while in Dubai, she said.

Hotel Hopes

“I’m here to find my best friend but I’m also here to expand my brand,” she said. “And I would love to open a hotel in Dubai, it would be incredible to have a Paris Hotel and nightclub. So maybe I’ll be checking out some properties while I’m here too.”

Greeting the audience with “as-salaam alaykum,” the Arabic salutation, she was keen to learn how to translate some of her favorite English phrases.

“How do you say ‘hot’ in Arabic?” she asked. “How do you say ‘huge’?”

The celebrity refused to comment on questions unrelated to the show, including reports of a romance with Manchester United footballer Christiano Ronaldo.

Hilton starts filming today until July 8 in Dubai, a spokeswoman at Viola Communications said. The second season of her BFF series, in which Hilton seeks her “best friend forever,” is currently being shown on MTV, according to the show’s Web site.

Maria Sharapova and Sony Ericsson partnership serves a style ace at Liberty
17 June 2009

Maria Sharapova today unveils cutting edge student works as part of Sony Ericsson’s latest design and style initiative, with London College of Fashion, which explores the link between technology and style trends.

London, UK – June 17, 2009 – Tennis superstar, fashion icon and Sony Ericsson global brand ambassador Maria Sharapova today unveiled exclusive London College of Fashion (LCF) student designs in the window of internationally renowned design store Liberty.

Over a term-long project, Sony Ericsson worked with the School of Fashion Design and Technology at London College of Fashion to explore the relationship between technology and fashion. Students were briefed by the Sony Ericsson design team and Maria, who sent a personal message of support to the students, to help inspire future designs and ideas.

Sony Ericsson and LCF
The Sony Ericsson LCF collaboration has involved more than 80 students from four degree courses, three year groups and countries across the world – all competing for a chance for their designs to be displayed in the window of Liberty, the opportunity to meet Maria and receive a prize from Sony Ericsson.

The winner was picked from a shortlist of 25 entries by a panel of judges including Maria, Sony Ericsson designer Tina Lekeberg, London College of Fashion Designers in Residence Boudicca and senior academics from the School of Fashion Design and Technology. The winner and two runners-up were revealed by Maria to international media today.

Known for her style on and off the court, fashion is one of Maria’s passions, and she played an integral part in the development of the course module and the student design judging panel.

LCF Winning Design
The winning design came from British student Georgie Davies, 20, a second year student studying for a BA in Fashion Design and Development.

Georgie wanted to find a way to alert a person when their mobile phone rings in a noisy bar, club or venue. She created a cocktail dress made up of interactive scales, inspired by butterfly wings. When the phone rings, the dress subtly lights up, alerting you to the call.

“I’m thrilled to be involved in such an innovative project that encourages creativity and pushes the boundaries of fashion,” said Maria Sharapova. “Georgie’s winning design presented a completely different look at how fashion interacts with technology. Everyone has shown such creative flair and I am really impressed with all the designs. My partnership with Sony Ericsson has given me the opportunity to be involved in so many fantastic projects and has enabled me to explore one of my passions – style.”

Sony Ericsson and Design
Over the past year Sony Ericsson has worked closely with Maria on various projects. The successful Maria Sharapova Design Collection was launched in 2008 – a range of mobile phone accessories, to compliment any woman’s outfit. The Sony Ericsson and London College of Fashion collaboration was created to encourage students to look in-depth at how technology and fashion can compliment and influence each other to create on-trend and forward-thinking designs.

“We have a fantastic international design team at Sony Ericsson who develop cutting edge technology designs by keeping ahead of style trends and working closely with leading institutions like the London College of Fashion,” said Aldo Liguori, Corporate VP and head of global communications and PR from Sony Ericsson. “By investing in fashion, it enables us to gain insight from future fashion stars as well as providing the students with a chance to get noticed on the world stage with our global brand ambassador Maria Sharapova, whose fashion knowledge has been integral to this project.”

London College of Fashion
Colin Renfrew, Dean of the School of Fashion Design and Technology, said: “The Sony Ericsson collaboration is a fantastic example of how London College of Fashion strives to form meaningful and innovative industry partnerships. The open and creative brief allowed our students free reign to develop design ideas that are forward thinking.

Having Maria involved in this project has really helped the students identify with Sony Ericsson and has enabled the winning design to be showcased worldwide – really highlighting the breadth of talent at London College of Fashion.”

Winner, Georgie said: “Winning the Sony Ericsson competition has been wonderful; it’s given me real confidence in my work. It was fascinating to work conceptuality with the idea of technology and how to incorporate it into fashion.”

Georgie received two tickets to London Fashion Week, two tickets to the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club and entry to the Sony Ericsson WTA Pre-Wimbledon Party, in association with Ralph Lauren. The two runners-up, Lova Moller from Sweden and Cecilia Ku from Hong Kong, also had their designs showcased with Maria and received a Sony Ericsson T707 mobile phone, two tickets to London Fashion Weekend and Liberty of London accessories.

Lova’s design took the concept of online ‘status’ updates and took it one step further by concealing cameras in a garment that continuously record the wearer’s surroundings and wirelessly transmit video updates to the mobile phone, which can be uploaded from a handset to the internet. Cecilia designed a metal bag that is a power source to charge items, such as a mobile phone, when on the move. Sony Ericsson phone designs and Cecilia’s love of clean lines interact well to create a stylish accessory.

Liberty
Liberty, situated on world-renowned Carnaby Street and in the heart of shopping paradise Oxford Circus, has always been synonymous with distinctive chic and eclectic but cool style statements – a perfect venue for Maria Sharapova and Sony Ericsson.

“We were delighted to host Maria and the London College of Fashion designers,” said Maxine Groucutt, Head of Visual Identity at Liberty. “Sony Ericsson approached us with a concept that supports the burgeoning British fashion industry – we were very excited to be involved!”

Telecom firms back standard phone charger in Europe

Posted on - Mon Jun 29, 2009 10:11AM EDT

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -

Top mobile telephone suppliers have agreed to back an EU-wide harmonization of phone chargers, the European Commission said on Monday, hailing the pact as good news for consumers and the environment.

The agreement by Nokia, Sony Ericsson and other industry majors will mean phones compatible with standard charging devices are available in Europe from next year, said the EU executive, which has pushed for such a deal.

"People will not have to throw away their charger whenever they buy a new phone," said EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen, estimating that unwanted phone accessories accounted for thousands of tons of waste in Europe each year.

The Commission said the agreement would involve the creation of an EU norm, and that the new generation of mobile phones would use a standard micro-USB socket to ensure compatibility.

There are an estimated 400 million mobile phones in Europe, with 185 million bought each year.

The chargers will be usable only for data-enabled phones, which have more capability than just standard calls and SMS texts. Data-enabled phones are expected to account for almost half of all new mobile handset purchases in 2010.

The Commission hopes that as people discard their old handsets, within three to four years all data-enabled phones in Europe will be using standardized chargers.

New data-enabled phones will come with a standardized charger but after an unspecified time the two items will be sold separately, industry group DigitalEurope said.

The director of DigitalEurope, Bridget Cosgrave, said the price of such chargers had not yet been determined.

Motorola, Apple, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments have also signed the agreement, the Commission said.

The 10 companies involved control 90 percent of the European market.

The standardized chargers will be compatible only with European phones, but Verheugen said he hoped other countries would follow Europe's lead.

"We're assuming this new European initiative will have a knock-on effect globally and manufacturers won't just be doing this on the European market," Verheugen said.

Sony Ericsson announces new organisational set-up for Austria, Benelux, France, Germany and Switzerland market units

02 July 2009

London, UK – July 2, 2009 – Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB {“Sony Ericsson”) announced today a new and more effective organisational set-up for market units Austria, Benelux, France, Germany and Switzerland that aims at further strengthening its relationships with operator customers and creating greater efficiencies across all areas of the business. These changes are effective July 1 and will be completed by the end of September 2009.

The new organisational set-up will group the Austrian, Dutch, German and Swiss markets as one cluster, under the overall responsibility of Luc van Huystee who will be based at Sony Ericsson’s offices in Dusseldorf. The markets of Belgium, Luxembourg and France will form a new grouping under the overall responsibility of Pierre Perron, who is based at the company’s offices in Paris.

“By grouping these important Western European markets, in this way, we are able to drive greater operational synergies, especially in how we can support our operator customers and consumers going forward. The changes announced today are part of our overall global plan to align our resources and become a leaner, stronger and more nimble organisation,” said Kristian Tear, head of region Western Europe and global customer operations at Sony Ericsson. “Our existing sales and marketing offices in these countries will continue to function as before and focus on further strengthening their relationships with operator customers and distributors,” he added.

Van Huystee and Perron will assume responsibility for their respective new areas in addition to their current roles.

Andrea Gaal, currently head of Sony Ericsson’s market unit Austria & Switzerland, and Max van den Berg, currently head of Sony Ericsson’s market unit Benelux, will remain in their roles until the end of September 2009. Gaal and Van den Berg are expected to assume new positions at Sony Ericsson after September, and details will be announced in due course.

Sony Ericsson is a top, global industry player with sales of around 97 million phones in 2008. Diversity is one of the core strengths of the company, with operations in over 80 countries including manufacturing in China and R&D sites in China, Europe, India, Japan and North America. Sony Ericsson was established as a 50:50 joint venture by Sony and Ericsson in October 2001, with global corporate functions located in London.

Units shipped in the quarter were 13.8 million, a decrease of 43% year-on-year and a sequential decrease of 5%. Sales for the quarter were Euro 1,684 million, a year-on-year decrease of 40%. This was due to continued challenging market conditions in all regions, particularly in Latin American markets.

Gross margin improved sequentially, despite lower volumes and sales, driven by a more favourable product mix and less material write-off costs than the previous quarter.

Income before taxes for the quarter, excluding restructuring charges, was a loss of Euro 283 million compared to a loss of Euro 370 million from the previous quarter. This was due to the better gross margin, as well as reduced operating expenses that are a result of the ongoing cost savings program.

“As expected, the second quarter was challenging and we still believe the remainder of the year will be difficult for Sony Ericsson. Our focus remains on bringing the company back to profitability and growth as quickly as possible, and our performance is starting to improve due to our cost reduction activities. The new product portfolio that integrates communications, entertainment and social media applications should contribute to healthier topline development when shipments start later this year,” said Dick Komiyama, President, Sony Ericsson. “We remain confident that the actions we are taking will further improve our financial situation and strengthen Sony Ericsson’s competitiveness.”

As of June 30, 2009, Sony Ericsson retained a good net cash position of Euro 965 million.

Programs started mid 2008 to reduce operating expenses by Euro 880 million are on track, with the full benefit expected during the second half of 2010. The total restructuring charges for these programs are estimated to be well within the previously announced Euro 500 million. Since the beginning of the cost reduction programs, the total global workforce has been reduced by 2,350 people.

During the quarter Sony Ericsson expanded on its strategy of transforming into the Communication Entertainment brand with the announcement of three new mobile phones; Aino, Satio and Yari. These phones integrate communications features with entertainment content and social media applications. In addition, Sony Ericsson announced the expansion of its content delivery platform, PlayNow™ arena, to include an application store and downloadable movies via PC.

Sony Ericsson maintains its forecast that the global handset market for 2009 will continue to contract by at least 10% from around 1,190 million units in 2008. Sony Ericsson estimates that its market share was over 5% in the second quarter.
